I recently had the pleasure of having a Sunday off work during the absolute mayhem that is the 2010 Olympics and decided to take a little field trip to a lovely town burrowed in the north-east corner of Vancouver.
It honestly felt like I was in a new place all together, like I had driven a few hours to a cottage getaway, when in all reality it was a mere 30 minute drive. My gf Taras and I started the day off early in the morning, grabbed my usual S-Bucks and hit the road to Deep Cove. Once in North Van.. a beautifuly windy highway takes you between the forest and the beautiful Burrard inlet. When you hit the main street, it feels like a cottage country village that would be swirling in the summer. Cute little bistros and ice cream parlours.
Wanting some physical activity, we decided to man up and rent a tandem kayak for an hour or two. I obviously fibbed a bit and said that I am an intermediate kayaker... but they soon found out I really knew nothing. Taras and I couldn't believe that we were getting onto the water in the middle of February but it was honestly such a beautiful day! Do not be deceived though... there was only a 30 minute survival period if we were to capsize... a little scary?... yup.
After being strapped in and set off, we immediately were startled with a a new friend who decided to pop up!... a sea lion? or seal? or the other one? oh yeah... otter! he was super cute and Taras wanted to snap some pics but I was too busy freaking out that if we were to both look the same direction that we would tip and therefore die a terrible terrible death.
Regardless... This story could go on forever.. there were so many great experiences and fun times to be had that I simply have to recommend that you go yourselves and check it out! I've posted a few pics to give a glimpse of the beauty that is Deep Cove BC! xx enjoy
